SUCCESS AND CINEMA: A CONVERSATION WITH ŞEVKİ ES

THE FUTURE OF TURKISH CINEMA WITH ŞEVKİ ES

Have you ever been curious about the story behind a successful career? We had an enjoyable conversation with Şevki Es to explore the inside world of the film industry..

-HELLO, MR. ŞEVKİ, WELCOME.

ŞEVKİ ES: Thank you, I'm pleased to be here.

-CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF?

ŞEVKİ ES: I'm Şevki Es. I've been in this industry for about 20 years. I graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Mimar Sinan University. So, you could say it was a bit of a coincidence... I became a director, and I've been directing for a long time now.

-WHAT DO YOU THINK DETERMINES A DIRECTOR'S SUCCESS?

ŞEVKİ ES: For me, a director's success is closely related to consistency. Consistency is crucial. I've always been a very stubborn and very dreamy person in my life, always chasing after what I wanted to do. This was a great source of self-confidence for me. There were moments when I stumbled, moments when I thought it wouldn't work, moments when I couldn't direct properly because I didn't come up through the ranks, I had a slightly different background. I almost started as a director directly within other crews. Sometimes I received strange reactions, I was always the different kid from outside, but I never gave up, none of them discouraged me. Technically, I learned to be as fast as they were. Technically, because I already knew what to shoot when I read the scene, how it should be, how it should be, because I set up a scene in my mind very quickly, so for me, setting up a scene took only 3-5 seconds.

-WHAT DO YOU THINK TURKISH CINEMA NEEDS?

ŞEVKİ ES: Different perspectives. Yes, we can make our series visually appealing to everyone, because their dramatic significance is very high. They also have a global audience. But we don't have an effective wide range. What I mean by this wide range is storytelling formats, styles, expressions. In Turkey, there's something like Art Cinema and Industrial Series. There's nothing in between. There are works that fall in between these two. And we need to produce these and sell them to the world. I believe that this system will be solved with the producers and executives who will understand this concept in the near future.

-WHAT IS YOUR DIRECTORIAL STYLE?

ŞEVKİ ES: My style, and what I try to convey, always comes from science fiction: to adapt our people to science fiction, we must first not make science fiction funny. We have to slowly impose it. We've been exposed to this thing in foreign works for a long time because we've adapted to it. For me, one of the biggest factors was visiting the United States. You know how things are done, how they care. Of course, my language skills are very good now, and that's how it happens when you get into the business. I believe we can do these things in Turkey.

-SO, WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PROJECTS?

ŞEVKİ ES: I'm currently working with Çağatay Ulusoy on a project. We're involved in the production of a series called 'The Bone Season' with him. Also, I've been working on a science fiction project for a long time, which has been on my mind and I've talked to many writers about. After that, I want to be involved in more projects with important figures in Turkish cinema.

-FINALLY, WHAT KIND OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG DIRECTOR CANDIDATES?

ŞEVKİ ES: I would advise young director candidates to read a lot of books and travel a lot. That is, spend a few years in this way before starting in cinema. But especially read a lot of books. Try to understand stories by reading books. Continuously improve yourself and try to gain different perspectives.

After this enjoyable conversation with Şevki Es, we are hopeful about the future of Turkish cinema. With his success story and vision, it seems that he will continue to contribute to the growth of Turkish cinema
