A DIRECTOR WHO CHASES HIS DREAMS: METİN BALEKOĞLU

The Secret to a Lasting Series: Touching the Viewer's Heart

Are you curious about how a career in the film industry starts and the experiences that come with working on various projects? Metin Balekoğlu, one of Turkey's renowned directors, shares his journey behind the camera with us. With the experiences he has gained over time, he opens an exciting window into the world of cinema.

- HELLO, WELCOME. FIRSTLY, COULD YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF?

METİN BALEKOĞLU: I was born in 1970. After finishing high school, I started working as an apprentice. My father wanted me to find a job, but I didn't want to work in a factory. I wanted a more liberating job, so I decided to try my luck in the film industry.

- AS SOMEONE WHO TOOK THEIR FIRST STEPS, WHAT OPPORTUNITIES DID YOU ENCOUNTER?

METİN BALEKOĞLU: I found my first opportunity by working on sets. With the help of an acquaintance, I joined the set crew for the project "Belene" in 1986-87. Later on, I was appointed as the assistant to Colin Mounier, the Director of Photography for Captain Kusto.

- YOU ALSO MENTIONED WORKING ON VARIOUS PROJECTS. WHICH TYPES OF WORK DID YOU ENJOY THE MOST?

METİN BALEKOĞLU: I've actually worked on every type of project, but I believe I excel the most in emotionally charged works. I particularly prefer to steer clear of fantastical stories.

- WHAT ADVANTAGES DID THE DIVERSITY OF YOUR PROJECTS PROVIDE YOU?

METİN BALEKOĞLU: Working on different types of projects helped me enhance my skills in using the camera and shooting scenes. I gained experience across a wide range of genres, from action scenes to emotional ones.

- WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THE CHALLENGES OF FILMING ACTION IN TURKEY?

METİN BALEKOĞLU: Filming action scenes can always be challenging, especially when faced with budget and time constraints. However, with the right equipment and technology, you can overcome these difficulties.

- FINALLY, WHAT ARE THE ELEMENTS THAT MAKE A SERIES LASTING?

METİN BALEKOĞLU: The longevity of a series is about the impressions it leaves on the viewers. Content that establishes an emotional connection and resonates with the audience tends to have a longer lifespan. However, there's no specific formula that applies to every series; it depends on the audience's preferences.

- THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE INTERVIEW.

METİN BALEKOĞLU: Thank you.

Metin Balekoğlu's story illustrates how diverse and exciting working in the film industry can be. With inspiration from his experiences, we hope he achieves even greater success in future projects.
